BOULDER, Colorado — A happy ending for the Boulder bicycle company, “Driven Technologies,” thanks to the community and local police working together!

On Wednesday, police recovered all three bikes, worth a grand total of $80,000.

Last week, the Boulder Police Department says a person broke into the shop on Wilderness Place by smashing a rock into the glass front door. The thief stole three bicycles, along with the prototype technology attached to two of the bikes.

The first prototype bicycle is worth $40,000– described as a black, heavily modified Cervelo P5 triathlon bike. The major modifications include a concept drivetrain (shaft drive, no chain) and high-end wheels.

The second prototype bicycle is worth $30,000– described as a black and blue Canyon Lux full suspension mountain bike. The major modifications also include a concept drivetrain (shaft drive, no chain.)

The third bicycle is valued at $12,000– described as a blue and white specialized Turbo Levo mountain bike.

Police say the least expensive out of the three bikes was found the day after the burglary, when a man walked into a local shop with the bike and had a pair of bolt cutters sticking out of his backpack. The shop owner called the police, who responded and arrested him.

Meantime, a community member spotted the second prototype bike in another part of the city and also called the police.

Further investigation led to the discovery of the third bicycle.

“I am so proud of the great work done by everyone involved with these cases. I’d like to thank the community members who spotted these bikes, knew something didn’t look right, and called us,” Chief Maris Herold said. “I am also incredibly proud of the swift police work done by patrol and detectives to find these stolen items, connect them to several recent crimes. We want our community members to feel safe and we hope this information gives them an idea of some of the great police work that our officers are doing to solve crime in this city.”

Nice work, team!
